The Wechat 101 Guide

Updated: Apr 28, 2019

What is Wechat?

Wechat is a mobile application available on iOS and Android smart phones. Wechat could just be the most popular app in the world that you've never heard of before. With over 800 million users it is used by a large majority of China and is an ESSENTIAL app in China. It isn't just difficult to live without WeChat in China it's just about impossible. Unlike facebook.

What can I do with it?

We think the better question to ask is "What can't I do with it?". Wechat has been labelled in the past by some journalists as the worlds first super app, and it's not hard to see why. Wechat at its core is a message platform much like facebook messenger or WhatsApp. Wechat allows its users to communicate for free and uninterrupted by ads as much as desired. However, beyond this simple messaging service wechat also hosts a number of different and very useful features. For a start wechat has an intergrated payment system "wechat pay" which is used in just about every business in the country (along with alipay). Wechat also makes it very easy to send money to friends.
